    Post War S&L RK Discussion

I have a few questions about the Post War S&L RKs.

    1. What is the purpose for S&L to make postwar RKs? Is it for new recipients after the war, vets who lost theirs in the war or just for collectors?

    2. Why is the 935RKs considered postwar and 935-4s are considered wartime? Especially since I can find no difference between the two except for the -4 (which a jeweler can easily fix).

    3. Is there any record of a 945-4 being awarded with prestige (if not then it is not a “wartime” RK)?

    4. Why is the 935s considered postwar?

    5. What is the time period of the Swastika S&L postwar RK production?

    6. How do you tell the difference between an early postwar (1945-1948) and a late (1950+)?

    Thanks for your time,

    Stephen

Stephen, there are pages and pages including countless pictures that address every one of your questions. Years of discussion, debate and comparrison...

The answers to all of your questions are (here) on the Forum and available by merely doing a 'search'.

By doing the research yourself you will better understand the DIFFERENCES and REASONS for post war Crosses by S&L
    Regards,
    Dave

          Stepehn,

Dave is (of course) right - the answers, or at least some of them, are in the archives. However, here's my short version:

          Purpose

I would think money. Mainly to sell to the occupation forces first, later the never saturated US-market. Veterans? Maybe, but verey, very minor.

          Why is 935 postwar?

The 935-4 is the first B-Type. 935-4 have alledgedly been found in Klessheim. No 935-4 has been found with provenance, yet. There is one cross that claims this provenance right now. But crosses can be and have been switched (as was always claimed with flawed A-Types with provenance while those were still deemed post war). The 935-4 quality is high. Several questions remain unanswered: why the use of high grade silver, why the incuse 4? Even loops made of 935.

The 935's are of lesser quality and the dent row is 'weaker' - so those are clearly later. This is the only indication of a time line - the weakening of the dent row and the (re)-appearance of beading flaws.

Adding a "4" is not that easy .....and can and will be spotted.

          Time Period

Well past 1962 for sure, most likely into the 80's. There are B-Types with swastika which have beading flaws all over the place and are well beyond the 1st Type 1957 model.
