Dietrich, the rust could easily set in instantly, no reason to think it started rusting a long while ago. If you take a piece of unfinished iron, wet it and instantly blow it dry with an air gun you will get visible surfsce rust.

Yes, but a core of an Knights Cross is not a piece of unfinished iron but rather coated with paint. And there is a (big) visual difference between the rust you describe (Flugrost) and the rust on this Zimmermann. In color and in consistency.

very nice example. Was the rim splitt open also? Resoldered?

Both had this speckled rust pattern which still can be seen with Jeffs cross after a little bit of cleaning.
That's just the fingerprint of this particular batch of Zimmermanns.

Dave you are correctthere was more than three or four, I was just referring to the 3-4 I saw.
Dietrich- the rim on mine was slightly open but not resoldered and i agree the rusted cores on these Zim's are all pretty much consistent and identical in appearance...Cheers...Jeff

since I don't know for sure I cannot answer your question. Sure is only that the building was in Germany.

The building was set on fire by a collector who read something on this forum about UV-light and the burn test.
He started off with the burn test.
Boy, did that went entirely wrong or what???

Intresting. There seems to be more than a few of these around and yet no one can say anything other than they have been burnt in a fire (which appears obvious) Enquireing minds want to know. What is the story?

in my opinion a strange story.
the rare zimmerman's ritterkreuz find in a burned building one year ago ?
in germany .
a simple question when was this building burned ?
in the war or a year ago.
can you believe that when this building where burned in the war this pieces have being there for 60 years !
and look like that in a damaged building !
then it would't be only rust.

This is one of the Zimmermann Knights Crosses that were found last year in a burned out building in Germany. It is damaged, yes, but it still shows very much the quality of the manufacture and is another example of how nice the Zimmermanns really are.
