    Re-painted Iron Cross 2nd class

    Dear Collectors,
can we assume that an Iron cross 2nd class has been repainted if we find black paint on the inner beading of the silver frame?
Did all makers paint the iron core black before they put all 3 pieces together?
or did some makers paint the Iron core black only after the cross was put together ?

    would appreciate any comments

It is generally a good assumption in rregards to an EK with a separate core. Personally I don't care if an EK was repainted or not as long as it was done right.

To be absolutely sure, buy another cross. They are easy to find.

There is, however, at least one manufacturer who seems to have painted its cores after the crosses were assembled -- "106." Every example by this maker that I have seen or heard of has black core paint going up onto the frames.

Hi Guys, thanks for your comments.
George, that is an interesting observation about the maker 106.

You can clearly see the mentioned trait in this pic!!
            I hadn't noticed it before.

Hi Nate , thanks for the picture.

@schinkel2, I have seen that kind of paint on the frame on all kinds of makers..100, 4 , 13, 56 and to add to the confusion, some of the crosses from the same makers do not have the paint on the frame

I noticed this after using a magnifying glass to examine the inner part of the silver frame of some crosses...
