      Hi merdock,

      What I like about it:

-The fact that the components are real. The spange is an unmarked Deumer piece, the EK 1 is of Third Reich manufacture.

-The consistent patina on the back on both spange and EK1

      What I don´t like:

-Hinge/pin/catch don´t seem to show the same aging and patina as the spange and cross itself.

Maybe that is just due to a different metal composition. On the other hand, it is good to see a build up of patina just above the hinge, which tells me the hinge has been there for quite some time.

For me it is not an item I would discard in a rush, further investigation might show good results. I am more positive about it than negative.

      Cheers, Frank

        I agree.....

.....with Frank. Don't just give it the ol heave ho right away. There is a similar cross in pictured in Forman's 3rd edition, pg. 34, but with a differing hinge/pin that is on the one you are showing. Everything else seems to be fine though from the images you posted.

          Merdock,

I'm with Frank on the Deumer spange looking original. I can see that yours has the small die imperfection on the right-hand number "9" (under the tail), but wanted to know if that was another die imperfection on the left-hand "9" (above the tail), or if it's just pebbling?

Seems to me that these Deumer spanges started out with no imperfections at first, slowly progressed with the imperfection on the right-hand "9" and later the left-hand (9) as well. It might date the time period your piece (spange at least) was manufactured.

Gordon or Frank could probably answer this more definitively.

          Overall, looks nice!

            Hi,
Thanks for the reply's there is a small inperfection on the left hand 9 but the reflection you see is mainly the stippling.

              Those are the two!

              Merdock,

Yes, that's the other spot where the die starts getting "dirty". I have a mint spange with die flaws in exactly the same two places, but are a little more pronounced on my piece, thus I would think your spange was manufactured prior to mine with the thinking that these only got bigger as time went on.
