So Kevin,

Did the Hauptmann survive the Stalingrad catastrophe, or not? One of the most impressive stories I've ever heard regarding the "Kessel" came from a friend of mine (who shall go unnamed, but he works for one of the top militaria auction houses in the world). Quite apart from all of the expensive objects of militaria that were soon to be auctioned off, he took me aside and showed me a simple carton containing a few photos, a "Frozen Flesh" medal and an Iron Cross 2nd Class...these had belonged to his father, who was wounded and flown out of the Stalingrad Pocket just three days before all air flights were shut down. No one got out from that point forward....
