Checklist for identifying fakes

I have used the fourm to learn a great deal, I have also purchased literature to aid my knowledge. However being on a tight budget I can not always afford to buy as many books as I would like. For instance I would like to purchase Gordon's new book, but funds do not permit.

However, if I would like to know a few points to look out for in fakes and genuine examples of the Iron Cross. Can anyone list a few bullet points of key elements. I would appreicate it very much as I am sure others would.

Im sure someone could put together a list of fake attributes but I'm not sure how much good that would do you. The list is constantly changing. Things that were original (ala Junckers/Spange combo) are now fake and things that were fake (ala 4 windowed HSF badges and propless Uboat badges) are now original.

You will probably find it more useful to concentrate on what is an original. Off the top of my head I can make three suggestions:

1. Read this forum a couple times a week (duh)

2. Save up for Gordon's book (and perhaps The Iron Time if you like pre-WW2 EKs)

3. Go to shows and visit dealers and HANDLE everything they will let you. It will piss some of them off, but you probably dont want to buy from the "dont touch my stuff" kinda guys anyway. Pick things up, flip then over, examine them in detail, from the beading to the date to the swaz and pin configuration. Books and internet pictures are wonderful, but you acquire a better appreciation for the quality of original pieces by handling them that you cant get by looking at a photo. After you have dozens pass through your hands, you will know what I mean...

Any appearing in large numbers at a certain well known auction house is pretty much a guaranteed fake.
