    Nordfront cross

    Hello!
Now and then one can find these German (Finnish?) crosses, called "Nordfront cross". I have seen them with white backing, or black. What is the story behind these? They were appearently awarded during the war, as I have seen pre-1945 pictures of the crosses being worn.

    Hello Bjorn,
These were known as FINNISH CROSSES. They were awarded to German military personnel and German police who served in Finland. They came in two patterns: 1941-1942, black or white enamel with the cities Salla, Uhtua,Petsamo, and Kiestinki on the arms of the swastika. 1941-1943 pattern, also found with black or white enamel, with the cities Liinahamari, Kiakkoniem, Petsamo, and Litsa are found on the swastika arms on this pattern. It is not known why the two color variations exist at this time. It is widely believed that these were commemorative badges rather than actual awards because there is no known specific award criteria for it, at least not yet anyway!
