Knights Cross Ribbon Attributes

Hi Guys,

I've looked through past threads and postings and I am trying to still come up with a check list for identifying an authentic 1939 Knight Cross ribbon and an early 1957 Knights Cross ribbon.

If anyone has any points that can be added to a checklist for either era then please post them here.

I think I need to know material, diameter, edging design, weave type and count for each colour or anything else that is deemed relevant by any member.

I appreciate that there will always be variables and I would like to hold all these variables in their relevant sections of a checklist.

At the end of the life of this thread I will collate all points into a single posting for others to learn from with the posting reference number to any photographs kindly submitted by the forum members.

Great idea! A man after my own heart!

Basically, it goes something like this:

Pre- 1945 ribbon:
-45-45.5mm in width
-scalloped border
-23,24,25 or 30 stitches per white band
-UV negative
-tight weave with 'coffee bean' appearance to each stitch
-Baumwolle material
-red band may vary from brick red to orange in colour
OR
-40mm width
-19 stitches per white band
-and as above


Post 1945 (early 1957)
-46mm or more in diameter
-can be well scalloped but not always
-often only 19 or 21 stitches per white band
-usually, but not always, UV positive
-more of a twist appearance to individual stitches
-'looser' weave

Here is a postwar ribbon. I dont know if we should call it a pure fake as it from time to time can be found on 1957 EK2's of the early good quality. Note the large/wide spaces between the threads in the weave. There is a RK sized version of this ribbon as well. That RK ribbon is sometimes found as a long length with a paper label around it with both printed and hand written info.

Here are two types of wartime weave for the EK2. Note the white stripe on the two ribbons.
On one ribbon it goes long-short-long-short-long.
On the other ribbon it goes down-up-down-up-down.
