EK1 from WWI w/1939 Spange to the Iron Cross

Here is a brain teaser...

This piece shows someone who won the iron cross in WWI and then again in WWII. I have been told that some of these individuals would have these items "married" by a jeweler and then display it on their uniforms...see what you think...I'd love to see if someone else has a similar piece.
