    German Cross in Cloth, Tropen

I noticed on the German Cross in Cloth survey that several listed tropical versions in their collections. There also seemed to be some controversy over these. Are there any photos of tropical German Crosses? I did a search but could not find any.

    Thanks,
    John

I was about to add that Dietrich has a tropical DK in cloth.

Beautiful Dietrich! Thank you for sharing photos of your cross.

I assumed your cross would be backed with a tan colored fabric. A cross like this would be best suited for a Luftwaffe, KM, or an SS tropical uniform. Were any tropical German Crosses backed in olive, for the Heer tropical uniform?

              John,

I'm not aware of any. The only other 'unusual' backing I know off is white".

Dietrich, this one looks a lot like yours. It also is an authentic example?
                Thanks,

Hi John, I must say I like the look of yours. I would say it is fine. It looks like it has the die flawed number 9.

                  Cheers, Ade.

Thanks Ade! I've had this piece a long time, and really can't remember just when I acquired it, perhaps 15 to 20 years ago. I finally got around to photographing it with the digital camera last night!

What is interesting about this and Dietrich's cross is the weave of the backing. It is an unusual pattern that is also found on some Luft. tropical insignia, and some Luft tropcial caps and tunics. Although they are of cotton, and these crosses seem to be woven wool.

                    Best,
                    John

                      Hi John,

it looks ok to me. I have two other examples with this type of starburst and they are Navy and Army. I would rather think this is a trade mark of this specific manufacturer. There's alos an example in Gordon's book on page 210.

                      regards,

                      Dietrich
