EK1 (1914) in PostWar Years?

Hi all,

I'm sure this subject has been addressed before, but here goes again.

Was it allowed for soldiers to wear the 1914 versions of the EK1 after 1945? Or just the 1957ish version?

Here is a interesting combo from Jamie Cross site. It has the EK2 (1957) spange 1st Class mounted on top of a 1914 (1957) 1st Class EK1. What do you make of it?

It would be nice to see a few pics of the 1914 EK1 in use during the post 1945 War years. Usually you only see the 1957 type being worn.

Do you know if the 1914 EK's were ever banned for a period shortly after 1945 .. you would think the Western Allies / Russians would be a tad bit antsy about that sort of thing?

Hi Darrell,

The 1914EK1-1957Spange combos are around. There's a seller on eBay that has them regularly, so it wouldn't surprise me to find out they are still being made for the collector market.

I don't recall seeing post-45 pics of 1914 vets, so I can't help you out there. Interestingly, now that I think about it, I can't even recall seeing a 1914EK ribbon on a 57er ribbon bar. I'd be really surprised if there weren't any though!

Here are a couple more 1914EK1s for your reference. Same core and frames but the "standard" pinback example is of much better quality than the example with Spange attached. Note that if you look carefully you can just make out two little circles where an EK2 loop would have been attached - the EK w/ Spange has this circle on the 3 o'clock arm though!

Yes, both mine, but for various reasons they live in different display cases.

Yes the imperial awards had no need to be altered and were made post 1945 for vets who had lost theirs and wanted replacements .

I,ve seen various WW1 and Freikorps awards made i.e.

The " elephant " order , schlagter shields and the mecklenberg crosses .

I have a ribbon bar with the the 1914 EK ribbon and miniature 1957 spange device , but it is obviously an altered WW2 bar . If anyone wants to post it here please send your Email address by PM .
