yes, 26. I have been told that crosses stamped with a number in place of an "L" number are cross issued by the military, is that true?

Looks like a nice BH Mayer (26). The difference between "26" and say "L/18" was after 1941, the L/*'s items were produced for private purchase through vending outlets. The Medals with just the numbers were produced for "award" pieces in the field.

BH mayer's are my favourite...(even though I sold mine) and was also my first purchase as well.
