L/17 Screwback Iron Cross 1st Class

This cross came from a veteran's lot last week. I can find no reference to this maker or this style L/17 EK 1, so comments please.

    Ron,

L/17 is not a known maker of the EK. Another thing is L/58 is the only one known to mark the screwback. Here are the only other L/17 marked EKs I have seen, from an old thread:

      Not just Souval

"L/56" has the mark on the screwplate too.

I stand corrected! Thanks George - leave it to you to have one of everything!

well I've had a glass of wine, and am feeling brave enough to single-handedly condem this cross, I'm sorry to say

          check these inner corners:
          http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...1&postcount=21

I 'think' yours matches the one on the right, which had the same core as mine on the left, which had a frame that matched a 100% known fake.
It's quite a detective trail but I think that makes them all very suspect, yours included. So, even fakers share components!
          anyone agree?
          regards

here's the whole cross (it's Gaz's btw, hope you don't mind!)
it shows all the die flaws, and seems like Ron's EK1 has quite a few too:

            Gaz's is an EK2 and marked 25

            more wine, anyone?

"Thanks George - leave it to you to have one of everything!"

Actually, I have two screwback "L/56" EK 1s with the maker marks on the screwplates!

                Jury still out

Well boys, the core on my L/17 doesn't match any of these listed in the thread and the L/17 fonts don't match the L/56 mark. I still think the jury is out and, without another example of a screwback L/17 with these characteristics, it makes me wonder if it is fake, as you would think there would be many more.
Die flaws appear on several of my known originals and, just as in the S & L threads, appear not to be a total proof to any extent.

                    That's a good question, Anthony.

Ron, I wasn't showing the "L/56" mark to imply any similarity between it and the mark on your "L/17". Rather, I was simply addressing the mistaken belief that only Souval marked their EKs on the screw plate.

Thanks George, and you are correct. Others besides these two marked there crosses that were screwback. I will look at my others that I have bought from veterans over the years and report back.

PS: I haven't seen some of them for years as I just put them away in the bank.

                        Hi,

George, actually it's not off topic. Imo it's a good point, as both are marks for Wernstein. Any 5 marked EK1 OR EK2 should help in this discussion for core/beading comparisons.

I can't help with the EK. I only have one L/17 marked item (a high quality Silver Wound Badge) and the mark is different on that badge - for a start the '1' is simply a straight line (no serifs). Read anything or nothing into that observation.

                        Regards

I saw a screwback marked L/17 just a day ago at Ebay.

                            Cheers.

Ron, are you saying that your EK1's beading does NOT match the fake mm25 I showed? looks the same to me...
