Clasp To The Iron Cross 2nd Class Dilemma

    Fellow Members,

I need a bit of advice here.

I recently purchased the 23mm version of the EKII Spange from Herr Niemann.

It had been there a while and was then reduced and being that I really like these items I decided to buy it.

    My problem is this.

Should I keep the spange attached to the ribbons (the EKII ribbon is also attached to the Easter Front ribbon)

    OR

Should I cut the ribbons off - note that the only way to get the Spange off is by cutting the EKII ribbon as I do not wish the open the arms due to fear of breaking them.

I have set up a poll and lets take things from there.

Sorry about poor photo but it's very dark here today.

    Regards ...

No, You have an historical group there and removing the ribbon would be wrong

Yes, the ribbons are pieces of junk and removing them will enhance the appearance of the Spange

If you want a nice spange by itself, just buy one and sell the one with the ribbon to someone who will treasure it for what it is! problem solved.

ummm...why on EARTH would you want to cut the ribbons off?? It looks to me like this set was removed from a tunic just the way it is. Cutting the ribbons off to get at the nice shiny clasp is a really sh&*ty thing to do IMO...

No, seriously Guys - looking for advice here.

I well understand the historical content of the ribbons but, Gee, to be fair, they don't look THAT good...

I will follow what ever the poll turns up so keep the votes and comments coming.

            Didn't realize you were serious!!

Ok then, rip those old rags up and polish that spang till it shines

              I disagree...

Isn't the fact that it is attatched to such a narled up pair of ribbons part of the appeal?

It's the contrast that appeals to me - just like photographing a mint EK set against the backdrop of an old rock or piece of driftwood.....

LEAVE IT BE - OR ELSE !!

OK, I give in - the ribbons stay.

I must admit that the first thing that went through my mind yesterday when the clasp turned up was to take the ribbons off by cutting them as I was unwilling to open the fixing pins, but then I started thinking ...

...I mean, the clasp has probably been on the ribbon for 60 odd years so should it stay?

Well I think the answer is Yes.

Anyway, I'm going to let the poll run and lets see what the overall result is.

Dave re: cleaning - rags are bit 'light'. Should I use a sandblaster or would a water blaster be sufficient?

I would say "sand-blast" it, as it will for sure remove that irritating shining surface.

No, leave the thing as it is right now, just my advice

If you do not want it any more, send me a PM, and we might can discuss a price

                    Hagwalther,

You had to ask forum members this question...????
If you do not know the answer already then you are collecting this stuff for totally the wrong reasons....

                          spange

                          Hello,

Well, I would leave them be, but I can understand what you mean by them not looking all that hot. Could you not just remove the Russian Front medal ribbon from the EK_2 ribbon, leaving the Spange attached to the EK_2 ribbon still?

Just an idea, but if it won't work like that, then I would leave them or trade it to somebody who is willing to help out the problem of OCD

                              Thanks Brett,

I think you will find that I enjoy collecting this genre of history as much as the next guy and that my reasons are as honourable as yours.

                              Thanks for your doubts though.
