I think you will find the red circle is an integral part of both the 1939 and 1957 versions.

Check out the following books:

The Iron Time by Steve Previtera

The Iron Cross of 1939 by Gordon Willaimson

Also, do a search on 'DKiG' or 'German Cross' on the forum were and you will see plenty of examples.
