This is why I am only interested in the 4 S&L WITH the L/16. I think based on details it's a postwar S&L. Not sure what S&L copies there are but the parts all add up to S&L.

                  ...with really convincing spray paint.

I think it is a WW2 cross that some idiot has unfortunately gilded later in a horrible bright gilt. Absence of the L/16 mark is no problem in my opinion. The thick gilding also accounts for some of the details lost or muddied. I have owned a couple of badges refinished in a similar substance and numerous ones that had been chrome plated post war- totally ruined them and impossible to get it off.

Here is a post war S&L Spain cross I have. It is not marked with the 4 on the pin . it has a post war set up. And the eagles are different. Cliff

I do not claim nor do I hope to be a source for postwar pieces. That last piece is just pure fantasy. It has sword hilts like an S&L, pebbling nice, but mostly stops there. Maybe that was their 60's piece. But again, don't wanna be a postwar guru.

No L/16 mark is OK if the cross is finished correctly. The one that started the thread is not finished as wartime S&L crosses were finished and yes I repeat for the third time, spray painted... Or gilted or whatever but a postwar S&L with a terrible gold spray.

Patrick. The hardware certainly screams S&L, not Souval.
