Timetable for the development of EK2 1939 cases

Is there a timetable for the development of LDO cases for the Iron Cross 2nd class (and KVK 2nd class)?

Within a couple of weeks I have managed to get two black LDO-cases for the Iron Cross 2nd class, one of them shown here. Both pretty much the same but with different maker marks.

This one has a pricetag. Beside the price it also reads 420/41 which I suppose is the dealers article-number for this particular item. My feeling is that the 41 marks the year 1941. And thus my initial question, is there a timetable for these LDO-cases?

This one has the, in my opinion, more attractive style of LDO-mark on the outside. I also frequently see other cases for sale that has the LDO-mark on the inside of the lid, with the letters in an rectangular frame. My feeling is that these are later ones, but am I right?

No one has an opinion on this? Or maybe the timetable for the EK2 LDO cases are considered common knowledge?

As far as I am aware no one has developed a timeline for the production of any award case.

The only thing we have to go on are LDO regulations, different fonts, designs and materials.

I hope that one day someone will turn up some paperwork relating to the different cases and manufacturers.

Personally I would agree with you.

The black EK11 case with the LDO logo on the outside is early, LDO case with the LDO logo on the inside later.

        Thanks for the reply!

So, for the time being I´ll work with the assumption that this is an earlier case, maybe manufactured in 1940 or 1941.

After reading a number of threads here I now know that the cases with the LDO-marking inside came with different colour versions indicating use with Iron Cross or War Merit Cross. But where there a special version of the (presumed) earlier case for the War Merit Cross?

Have a look here: http://www.auszeichnungen-der-wehrma.../html/ldo.html - the more intricate design was developed during late 1940 and packaging bearing this logo was manufactured ahead of the official introduction of standard LDO packaging in March 1941. The second more simple design was approved at a meeting of the LDO on 19 August 1941. This was to be used on packaging made after this time but packaging with the original logo could still be used until stocks were used up.

Different styles and colours of packaging were designated for different awards so you will find black half-cases like yours with both the first and second logos. That applies to many of the other cases, half-cases and cartons including a brown half-case for the KVK II (with and without swords) which was similar to your EK II half-case but with a different insert to fit the shape of the cross.

This information is detailed in the journal "Schwert & Spaten" which is unfortunately very difficult to get hold of, although you can find some images of individual articles or pages if you google "Schwert und Spaten" and LDO.
