    Hi Toby

I am not sure of dates, but here is one I got from Detlev a while back. It does not have the ldo logo on the top, but has a different style logo on the inside of the lid. Later than yours I believe. I have never scanned it, so only have the Detlev pic.

Trevor, thanks for posting that very interesting info.

    regards
    Graeme

Thanks for your reply but how do you know with such certainty, i.e. 100%?

Could it perhaps be that prior to the March '41 LDO directive, such cases were used for EK2's? Furthermore, could the very fact that clarification was needed by means of an LDO directive, be an indication that awards and cases were being matched in a manner that didn't conform with the LDO's requirements, prior to that point in time?

          Best,
          Toby.

            Hi Toby,

That strikes me as theoretically possible since these instructions (and LDO numbers, by the way) were first issued in March 1941, but the LDO as an institution was set up some months earlier. So without knowing exactly when these cases were designed and first used, we'd have to consider it possible that LDO cases were mis-used between the founding of the LDO and the issuing of numbers and packaging instructions in March '41.

But overall I think that we'd have to consider only a black case really correct for an EK2, since a brown one (for example) used for an EK2 before March '41 (if indeed these cases existed before then, which I somehow doubt) would have been "matched in a manner that didn't conform with the LDO's requirements," as you said.
            Best regards,
            Streptile

              Hi Toby,

May be your right, and my original comment was a little arrogant.

I am convinced that these cases were used for KVK's every single time I see them they have KVK's in them.

Could a factory ship out EK2's in these cases due to supply problems with EK2 LDO boxes yep I could buy it but it could never be proven

I believe these LDO cases were made by one factory and shipped out to medal manufacturers and the name of that factory is now lost.

The brown cases with the red inserts ONLY fit KVK crosses. An EK2 will not fit at all. My brown case with the blue insert ONLY fits an EK2. Sure, you can place a KVK in it, but it doesn't fit correctly. So, regardless of what you guys think, for me, the blue insert case is for an EK2...
