Probably more pictures than you need to make a determination but I've always found it's better to have too much information rather than too little to work with. Hope you agree.
Both are good as Pilchy notes, the D&B I deem perhaps an earlier sorts in the regard it's considered a trait that of the recess having material filling the gap and the quality of velvet covering also.
It's not gospel, but there is more to perhaps suggest this than not.
As to the Imperial era case, I dont think this very outer covered example was made within the duration of the war. I believe this very pattern has been associated and thought by several conversed collectors to be very early 1920's.
Alot of these can be found with their cardboard outer carton devoid of the red wax seal and it's perhaps to this the notion can be attributed too.
Thanks for this additional info. I have been reviewing my EK to see which will go best with these cases. As it happens I have an early Deschler that fits like a hand in glove into the TR case and a 1920s EKI that will sit well in the Imperial case. Just as if I planned it!
For the information of anyone reading this thread in days to come I thought I would update it with information I have received on the Imperial case.
Apparently this case is called the "rhombus" style case and was being issued as early as late 1917 with SW EKI. This information is from a collector in Germany, far more experienced than I, who purchased a group of items including original awards and documents directly from the family of the German soldier.

Hi Stu,
Is the collector looking at the doc to determine the date ? I'd view that more a guide than a definitive clue to be honest. There's too much leaking water in doc dates concerning actual issue/in hand for a water tight date.
However, late 1917 could very fit into the scope of era cetainly. It would interesting to see his pattern of case and the base compared to yours exactly and an example I have, which I view post 11.11.18 so to speak.
Rhombus of course being a posh word for a diamond shape (in aviation we call it a lozenge just to be difficult, but in laymans terms it's a diamond for us common lot lol) as can be seen on the pattern of the outer covering.
A so called proper 'Rhombus Case' is a jewellery box of a similar pattern normally in wood.
I learned this information and also that the case came with outer cardbox with the seal of the general Ordenskommissions, from Motorhead (Micha) over at GMIC. I was checking out his sale thread, was too late to get it, then wrote asking what information he may have on the case. His reply was the basis for my post. The pictures are still on the thread there and here is the link...
