    Memel medal with box

    Hi guys!
Is this box original for Memel medal or it's just "Austrian medal" box - what do you think?

    Hi Roman,

I have read in a few references (I think Angolia & Forman) that the Memelandes came in a red case, which I've presumed to be the same one as the Anschluss medal comes in. They may be interchangeable - and I cannot see why the other two blumenkrieg medals would come with a case and the Memel not. I have my Memel in a similar red case.

      Thank you for answer, John!

I consider too there should be a unique box for a Memel medal.

i suggest you do a search. i believe that the real outcome has been that the red case has been added after the fact to increase value.

Further to my earlier reply I am now at home with access to my library (instead of at work!). Forman mentions a Memel case as does Detlev in his 2nd edition price guide (not Angolia or Littlejohn & Dodkins), in fact DN states that both cases were identical pp267. I do not think that it can be proved or disproved that the Memel was cased. The case may have been added to increase the value but a case has it's own intrinsic value anyway so of course it would increase the total value.

The buggerance and crux is here is no evidence what so ever to suggest the Memel medal came in any form of hard case (or for arguments sake, not too); granted though it would seem logical for the a continuation of such.

But we have the bright red exmple for the Austrian medals and burgundy sorts for the Czech medal......so I wonder why the Austrian red case for the Memel too ? No distinct case of it's own as such ???

Foreman's & Detlev's guides are great guides/books, but as for any conclusion on this matter would be an partially educated guess at best to be honest....as correctly stated we don't know by premise means.

The fact is it was that last of the 'Flower War medals' and the actual issue was the latter part of 1939. By this stage (and just before) packets were being used for further issue of the Czech medal. This form of packet is the incipient guise of what was to evolve - I believe this was the general packet for issue of the Memel also.

I think it was purely the limited production of issue numbers and from when it was instrumented to issue that perhaps a case is lacking as sole intention for, and maybe just maybe the other two forms of ''Anschluss'' were used as a supplement case from certain makers.

I think you'll find it also depends on makers to some extent to what awards have hard cases, not all did.The case cost more to purchase for the award maker than the actual single award production. This is a pre 'regulated' award where all insundry could have a dabble.

So it's six of one half a dozen to some degree, but I'm still convinced there was no specific case though or intended for the Memel......use of stock I can envisage that, yes....perhaps, as it seems viable/logical to an extent looking for answers and I would assume both styles of cases were perhaps used if going down that road, by one or a number of makers if this is the case.

So it's up to the collector really, but I still think the packet is the key to this medal not Austrian cases.
