    This case puzzles me

OK I've been going over this award case for two weeks trying to figure it out. I need help! What was it for originally? It works very well for the EKII but I don't think that's what it was for originally.

Thanks for the help and the education!

    Cheers

I don't think it is for a military medal at all. I think it is just an exquisite old jewelry case that happens to fit an Iron Cross. There is no recess for the cross, is there?

                Just a thought...Tom

                  Hi Tom,

Actually there is a recess for the cross as well as a slight cut out at the top for the ribbon to drop down inside the body of the case. Very strange.

interesting little bugger this one !

Gary can you give me the measurements and a photo of the underside of that base and inside the bottom of the case too please.

What intrigues me is the hinge area and this KV lettering. I'll pop a link into the Imperial forum but this case reminds me so much of the TR 1914-18 Honour Cross cases.

(it's nearly 0100 here so I may to go to bed in a while, but I'll be back to this later and if anyone else can help please do so)

                    Kr

                    Marcus

                      Hi,

It certainly looks like an old (pre-39 case). It may indeed have housed an EK2, in which case the letters may either be initials or unit related. Alternatively, K V may stand for something like Krieger Verbund and the case contained a totally unrelated cross. The recess mentioned at the top of the insert, and cross insert, certainly restrict the original contents to a ribboned/suspended cross though.

                      Regards
                      Mike

Let's see how the recess is made and the bottom of the base. It would be very easy to alter or even new construct a base to "fit" an iron cross or some other award. You see these alterd "award" cases all the time on German ebay, although examination of the actual case usually reveals a poorly done modification...Tom

Was not the 1914 Iron Cross available for private purchase? I would think a jeweler would offer excertional examples, in nicely fitted cases. I certainly have some unusually cased Iron Crosses.

The KV is certainly added as an afterthought, by someone other than the case maker.
