    IAB Box?

    Hi All
the rest of this story is on the Heer badges forum. A fellow came by my place yesterday whose father just passed away. His father was 90 and he had a brother who died while fighting in Russia. He found this cardbord box with the infantry badge that is the badges forum in it? He didn't know where or when his father acquired it. It looks like a naval badge box but is bigger? Any thoughts?

          Hi Steve,

When the badge sits in the case is it snug or is there room to spare ?

I looked on the other thread mate and to be honest, I personaly think the box is likely genuine to the badge. You're not wrong about some Marine badges being in blue boxes of a similar sorts - you've the Schwerin in the dark blue ones and then we encounter other makes in part coloured boxes of shades of blue etc.

I don't pay to much heed to these part coloured boxes being relevant only though to Marine awards soley to be honest - only perhaps the Schwerin guise.

Your case I'd call a generic case for all manner of awards, the gauge of the cardboard looks nice and thin and correct for a period example, the parting where it's been scribed and bent another genuine trait and the 90 degree bent staples too, correct for a period little box.

I personally without the measurements see no reason to suspect this little box is not genuine and period. Even if the measurements are different and outside of the norm encountered, I think I'd still be prepared to believe in this little case as much as one can.

The tissue looks to be a bit white though ?

2.75'' I make that at around 7 cm, not exactly I think there is a mm or so in it, off the top of my head.

It's not common to find square boxes, they are normally rectangular. I still see no problem with it in my opinion as a generic type case of the desired period - that is only an opinion and nothing based on premise other than as I've already noted. You could black light it and the tissue/p, thats a good indicator but not gospel.

The tissue I would guess is not of the period 1945 or before and an addition at some later date.

It's a lovely little box and a great looking IAB ! If ever you flog it let me know

I have quite similar constructed box, the same staples, but much smaller. I got a Hindenburg cross for next-of-kin in it. It's not blue outside, but the same grey color as this inside, and the upper and lower portion are not separated. I'll post some pics if anyone is interested.

the bottom of the box. Orange spots look like seal wax or something and they appear old. Any comments welcome.

This cross came with a document to the mother, from East Prussia, I think.

                              Thanks for looking!
