    Hello all

I thought I would revive this thread and add something.

I recently purchased a Louis Gottlieb & Söhne EKII packet that came with an EKII. When I checked the EKII it was a marked '138' Julius Maurer

As this is an old thread I'm interested to know if there have been any developments on the Louis Gottlieb/Julius Maurer theory.

Pictures of the EKII and Packet below.

      Hi Matt,

Not that I know of. You Added another one to the list, which already helps. We may never find out what or why there was a connection between the two makers.

It is good that you found this thread and now know they do belong together.

      Regards, Thomas

they are still in business. maybe gottlieb simply provided bags for 138 crosses.

I personally think it is very unlikely that Maurer would have purchased bags from another supplier with the other supplier's name printed on it.

That would be like Nike selling unmarked shoes in an Addidas box. It would not make sense .

so you are saying that all bag producer also made crosses?

That has certainly not been proven and many of these makers are not even on the 1-138 list.

Both are quotes are in my eyes not likely to be true and you are saying two different things.

It could have been that Gottlieb just could/didn't produce EKII's or wasn't allowed to make them, but didn't want to say no to its customer when they wanted to order/buy them. Cross sell instead off still sender your buyer to a competitor where it could also cross sell for other products.

So Gottlieb simply both EKII from Maurer and had its own packets to sell them in.

                  Regards, Thomas

There are certainly a number of packets/manufacturers that have no attributed crosses. This does not mean they never procured crosses from other manufacturers or never made a small number of their own. There are still some unattributed variations with no known maker that could explain these. I do believed that all intended to make crosses of their own. If they could not make their own they would have procurred either the parts or the complete crosses from another manufacturer. This is something seen even within the large manufacturers.

I'll re-state what I said about Gottlieb supplying packets to Maurer. I think it is extremely unlikely a manufacturer (Maurer) would use packets stamped with the name of another supplier (Gottlieb).

I also think it is unlikely that at least seven 138 marked EKIIs turned up randomly in Gottlieb packets. Maurer is an uncommon maker of EKIIs. Louis Gottlieb and Sohnne is an uncommon packet. The chances of these being paired up randomly is actually quite small and suggests there is a connection between the two firms as Thomas has previously suggested.

what I wrote was in an ironic way.

IMO, there are acouple of ways this could have happened.
                      1. Maurer for some reasons could't provide bags when they should deliver their crosses, so they had to buy from a "neighbor" factory.
                      2. Gottlieb wasn't allowed to produce ek's but still wanted to sell(as already suggested). So they used their own bags and the neighbors crosses.

I don't think that all producers could do both bags and crosses. Just like factories often do even today. Where I work we manufacture things from bought parts, including packaging that we haven't produced ourselves either. Packages that we buy have either our customers logo or the box manufactures.
