Got this case very cheap. Fits very nicely for a ek2. You can clearly see that a cross or a very similar thing has been in the box for a long time. So I appreciate all the help I can get about it.

Can we see a pic of the catch please.
This case outer covering looks more apt for a wound badge, I think it's a 'modified' case and not private purchase personally.
If you look at the lower half: the strip that could cover the hinge is missing, the cardboard border - I can make out something but not a lot in detail and not that it looks very well done either.
The lid liner looks more puffed out than usual and not very neat at the corners and sides; even considering the age, the life it's had and a collector taking it apart etc etc in the past, I'd expect better from a private purchase piece - what ever period this was done it looks 'home made' than a quality conversion.
The base dosen't exactly fit by the looks either.
I do think this is a TR era case though and not Imperial and a genuine case, shell and outer covering, perhaps the catch can lead us to deduce something on the case era more so, but I'm pretty certain it's TR (?) But it would be wise to get opinions of the Imperial guys too - I am not an expert.
Do I think it's a fake conversion ? I couldn't say in all honesty - I do think it's not a true EK2 case though and has been a modification by someone other than a retailor outlet etc etc etc
Just my opinion on the pic's.Last edited by MH184; 11-08-2006, 03:34 AM.

hi friends...
I have checked the case carefully. The hinge setup is the same as on a l/11 Ldo ek1 box I have. The black cloth seems to be velvet. Its rock hard like in the ek1 cases. The little white border around the velvet seems to be linen or similar. I cant take it apart. The white "cushin" is more "fluffy" than in regular cases.
I think its off rather high quality. Equal to regular ek1 cases.
some more pics also attached.Attached Files

I knew I should have mentioned the beaded border , yes I confess I do agree thats an anomaly to me in this instance and is a significant sign of the more private purchase types to some extent - true of some fakes too But no worries I think on the shell and outer covering here. Even some earlier cases as well in fact (this is perhaps were Al got the impression of an Imperial eara case)
Uuumm a hard one to assess to conclusion; I take on board your experience and I use your eyes too. But needless, I'm still not fully convinced myself that this is a form of an actual bonified EK 2 case make-up. It could be a one off certainly, but it's not talking to me either,, but then I don't have it in hand.
I'd say this was a wartime produced case, judging by the catch and outer covering and to some extent the shape too - again just my thoughts and opinion.
The velour covering, unless I was to have it in hand it would be difficult to presume, you can tell on some fakes/genuine via the pile of the fibres, backing etc.
You will encounter the same hinges, case shell, lid liners and even coverings for the base in a mixture of award 'use' cases, even outer coverings: the EK/KVK and WB being related for three main common award types. It's a good sign you found the hinge on another case
I'll stand by my initial view but on such like with reservation as my opinion isn't gospel or the last word.
I don't know ultimately, but can only express myself in mind. Interesting, it's one I'd like to look at and even take apart if honest But thats even a 50/50 revealing process unless in hand to observe a multitude of things.
Let me have a think on this and if anyone else can help please comment.
Where are you in Europe Scho ?

i'm in sweden.
the catch head looks like it was painted black, BUT the black stuff is from the other side, rubbed off, thats my guess/and what I can see at least. And if you try to remove it, its very easy done.
I got booth the cross and the case from the same palce, the cross is a wartime original. But seems to be unissied. A guess would be that the cross was handed out posthoumusly and maybe the famliy got it altered. Really just guessing.
