I'm with Tom, no idea on this one I'm afraid. I confess the date eludes me, I've never seen the likes. Perhaps it's just coincidence the numbers fall in sequence of 1938 and it's not a date ?
Whats significant is that the pin recess has been done to encompass something 'specific' by the looks.
Can anyone throw any light on this ?Comment

As Marcus said that pin recess is significant, rather large, so would that mean that the award was heavy, a breast star maybe???????????

A strange one this, there are things that look to be okay in a liberal sense via the pic's and thing's that don't add up as it were.
If we take the base, a grey cardboard base with two wooden struts, I'll assume it's perhaps a layered cardboard base built up to account for the recess perhaps.
The combination of cardboard and wood usage, yes and no......this pertains to fakes as well as some genuine examples. It's non military in the general sense of TR award cases which I'm more semi conversant with.....so cases like these are difficult to assess and not my forte in any way shape or form.
The cloth covering isn't done very well in my opinion, it's uneven around the edges and the reverse finish looks to be a non measured fit......not something I associate personally with 'German construction' as a norm of the era, even being objective it's lacking a standard. Overall it's sloppy in the base coverage.
The colour of the base material also makes me wonder too.
Could it be a period case of sorts with a new base fitted ? Could it be post war, fake even ? Is it even German made ?
I've more questions than answers for this one.
Can you show me a pic of the catch, the hinge, the outer covering pattern detail and the material in the lid and section over the hinge gap please.
