    Spanish Campaign Medal 1936-1939 packing

Dusting out the boxes I ran in this one again.
    Almost forgot I had it.
Very happy I scored this one with the cardboard box!
Though a little damaged I think it still is a nice set.
I guess the box is ok, but I ain’t got any reference material and on the site I could find an example.
Anyone any problems with the packing material?

    Best regards,
    Martin

Always very difficult to tell if honest, as the packaging for these was the same until the early 1970's so I believe.

Whether they were surplus stock or not is not entirely known (medal and carton; perhaps someone knows or has other thoughts) but these medals were produced post war (both wars..so lets say post 1945)

I think my wifes grandfathers was issued in 1939.....I'd have to look at the details, but his carton looks exactly like yours as far as I can tell with the wax paper too...thats as much as I can tell.

I know this example I now have is period......others ??? I couldn't say with any conviction, whether they look the same or not. This is the problem with Spanish award packing of this period and latter.

I'm not sure but I think the medals may slightly differ, those produced post war to incipient and of a 'period' issue. I'm really not certain on that.

If so you could perhaps judge the pair to an extent on that theory of thought perhaps ?

            Hi Marcus,

            Thanks for your answer.
You confirmed my thoughts about the medal: I kinda thought to myself that this medal probably was produced long time after the war.
Maybe even as long as Franco was in the saddle?

When I bought it, I gave this one a good chance being period, because of the short telephone number on it.
            Just three digits...
But ofcourse, no real proof, more an indication and it doesn't say a thing about the medal.

(I don't think I have to feel ashamed confessing I bought this medal because of the packet?)

            Best regards,
            Martin

Yeah the telephone number seem's to have remained the same (?), this is one of the 'contentions' in the deliberation certainly.

No shame in buying the packet and the award being second, I've spent alot of money doing that !!!

I don't like the washy blue coloured cartons you get for these also, just a preferance really, but I don't take to those at all.

                Medalla de la Campaña 1936-1939

Don´t worry. You have an original 1936-1939 campaign medal. MM Egaña, for front line duty. You can see another with green stripes instead black which is for non combatients. This medals dated from 1938 and all Franco´s soldiers got it. IMO is one of the most beauty medals. Enjoy it.

A lovely medal and packet for sure. I also always figured the shortened number was at least a decent indication of a period example. Of course I am no where near as experienced or well versed as most.......

I picked one up from a shop in Wurzburg Germany a couple years back.........story went that it belonged to a friend of the owner ect ect.....so of course a story is a story. Either way it remains one of my favorite medals because of its beaty and connection to Legion Condor and one day when I finally get a nice pilots badge I will frame them all together.

One of my favorite medals. But Egana must have continued making them post '45, and/or made far more of them than there were recipients. Almost every militaria dealer on the web has handfulls of these for sale, all mint, boxed and un-boxed.

Quite true Scott, they are abundant that is for sure. There must be some way to tell the difference between WWII era manufacture and post war. Of course there will likely be overlap the same way American medals are hard to pin down but still if we search hard enough eventually some general rule will likely be accepted?

They did and thats the problem full stop. The packageing as I say continued to have the low digit number too. So god knows, not one I've looked into that much as it's a foreign award to my German interests.

These weren't the only makers of the Campaign medal, so versions do vary to a degree, be it certian detail. colouring or the ring size etc

Oh way over priced these too !!! (on some dealers)

I agree with Marcus - way over priced for as common as they seem to be. Tough to find one for under $60 these days . I've got one - but it's part of a medal bar.

I bought mine in the good ole days of the Dutch Guilder.
When life was cheap and women were willing.

Paid a bit less then €25, I remember.
I thought that was a fair price, should it turn out to be bogus it wouldn't hurt too much.

                            Best regards,
                            Martin
