EK2 box or Faithfull service box

    Hello guys,

I bought this one this week. I came to the understanding that this might be a faithfullservice box instead of EK2 box. Is that correct?
Or is it an EK2 box with a faithfull service award inlay?

Okay, I'll start again on this case.

What we have is a clear indication that the recess is smaller, this could then really be more fitting for a Schinkle and apt certainly for a Faithfull Service Cross.

I do not differentiate between colours, as we can not account for this properly with the examples to hand. To date we have EK in black and navy blue cases and the same applies for the FS cross.

I'll comment further latter and add some thoughts.

The schinkel cross diffinitely didn't came with the box, I'm sure of that.
            Kind regards,

              You are correct Giel.

The box is sold as an 'EK2' box, I've heard from several people that this box is not 'EK2' but one for a 'faithfull service cross'.
I do not know a lot about LDO boxes, but I'm a little confused right now.
Is it true that these 'faithfull service boxes' are cheaper than the ones we consider an 'EK2 case'?
I like the box and the cross, but I don't want to 'overpay'.
What would one pay for this box with an ek2 L/11 in it?

                Rik,

IMO these cases and their prices are one big chaos, from the point on that some collectors wanted to pay these extremely high prices, the market value climbed up extremely fast. In contrast to these so called service cross boxes, where more then 50% of the people doesn't even know of their existance, the price isn't really set (yet). So if I were you I wouldn't pay a very high price for it.
I would say 200-250 euro foe the schinkelcross and about 100 euro for the box.
                Kind regards,
                Giel

For an L/11 in a 'correct' Ldo case you would pay 400-450 euro.

I have some thoughts regarding the size of the recess, but I'm still working on this.

If we say for arguments sake the case recess is to small for a 44mm cross of norm, then it narrows doen the thought on these.

But if we consider this is an earlier form of Ldo case, and if we assume it was introduced around the May '41 date, what were the sizes mostly of crosses frames then or early Deumer......who made the schinkles, we don't know, how many makers were there and again we don't know ???

I think it very very unlikely a case base as such was just made for a Faithful Service cross alone !! At this stage weren't EK makers on a 'free for all' spree of making awards how they desired with no regulatory requirements as such. Remember Deumer didn't make this case, the Ldo catored for needs, so could this be a generic (use for FS & EK) but very early case ?

Just some of my thoughts going off on a lateral one.

Do we know as premise that Deumer never made a schinkle type cross even ?

I first saw this LDO type case for an EK2 when I was in school in Baden bei Wien, Austria. That was 1972-73. One of the Austrian students brought in his dads medals and award documents to show us, and his EK2 was in this LDO case. From that moment on, I was on a mission to acquire one of these. I think that opportunity came about 10 years later. I bought the box alone from a collector who was selling off his cases and packets. Since then, I have acquired a number of these, rarely with a cross in it.

As for values, IMO, all original cases are kind of uncommon. This LDO Faithful Service Cross case is seen fairly often, but is still an interesting case to have. The only thing is that it is not as valuable/desireable as the EK2 case. And they certainly are not interchangeable. The opening might fit some other awards, but certainly not an EK2. I guess I would ask $30-50 for a Faithful Service Cross case, whereas an EK2 case would likely bring $300-500. Hope this helps.

Interesting comments. And I want to thank everyone who made one.

I paid 350 Euro for this pair, some would say that that's too much looking at the LDO box. I sure like it ( I'm also a little crazy) and for now I want to keep this variant, I do mind the EK2 or faithfull sevice cross issue and follow it with great interest. It sure made me think about these boxes and questioning is it worth it and which medals should be in it.

Marcus I'm interested in your further thoughts about these.
Is/was there ever been somebody that did a research on these and other LDO cases and wrote it on paper? (probably it will be in a book or so, but I haven't even got one book on any medal or case/box.)

                      Thank you

In JR Angolia's For Fuhrer And Fatherland, Vol 2 (updated), page 143, he shows a fathful service cross in a box just like this one. He calls it a "variation pattern case".
