Questions on this LDO Case for the EK1

    Hello All,

I just got this christmas gift..an LDO Case for the EK1 from Detlev...

    3 Questions to ask:-

    1) Any idea when this case was produced?? Pre war , Mid war ,Late war?
    2) The maker for this case ??
    3) There is a slight tear which makes it loose (Detlev didnt wrote the tear but did said that it was loose. So should i repair it?? How to ?? My opinion would be NOT to....but im open for suggestions.

    Thank You in advance

    Cheers,
    Ibrahim,
    Singapore.

            Hello Ibrahim,

Singapore !! Wow these cases and packets do travel all around the world.

This is a late war case, roughly the latter part of 43 and onwards, some may say 44 onwards...and it may well be. Why perhaps earlier in my opinion, well to split hairs the quality of materials used within your case prescribe to some of a mid quality and only the fact of the catch devoid would perhaps give us an incipient period of 'guessing' by an educated estimation.

Remember though at the same time you'd have earlier made boxes being issued and still catched examples also perhaps being made with stock parts. This box is however intended to be minus the catch, and this exact form of yours you could say is an earlier sort of the Halbetui, not that it makes any difference in value.....interest only and visible signs of evolution in the boxes of type.

These are called, 'Halbetui' or halfcase, sometimes called vacuum cases by collectors because of the fit of the lid to base and the suction as such.

The maker, determination, is difficult, I think this base would be a 621 KB, it may even be a 629, but by the shape an 'earlier' 621, as it's not so very flat as in later production types of base.

D&B we know was a maker, KB could have been a supplier of bases, a maker or indeed both.

As to repairing the case, well it is only a lose bit of outer covering, my preferance is not to repair, but you could use some paper glue or what we have in the UK, Pritt Stick (a mild paper glue) which would be apt for such a repair. If I was to repair it I'd use a very small bit of glue to just hold the torn remains to the body of the box.

            Just my opinions and thoughts,

            Kr

            Marcus

No it's a 621 or EK base for sure (well he says....from the pic I'm prety sure, a plan view would be better of course), I forgot one of Marcus' rules of deduction, the square recess at the top means it's EK (621) not other i.e wound badge base 629 which is rounded.

See this pic to see what I mean:

(I did this for a German forum, so VA is WB - wound badge)

EK base: thats NOT TO SAY that these bases weren't used for wound badge boxes, they were just made with the intention at the time for such as EK, KVK.....etc

The box is the same after all (but not in every instance, there are jsut specific WB boxes)

I'm going all to deep now and confuseing the issue........do you all kinda follow what I'm saying, roughlyish

                      Hi Ibrahim,

There are no specific books on the subject at the moment, I've been writing/collateing one though for near on two years, and that will be an all colour comprehensive catalogue of each and every variation (within reason) in the 1939-45 (and covering the Spanish Civil War and pre war 'Flower War medals under campaign as such) period of EK and Combat Awards cases and packets, boxes and outer cartons (paper, wax, cellophane, cardboard and wood etc) and another volume at a later date on Civil and Political. They'll also go in the manufactureing process, makers etc etc....alot of info thats never come to light as of yet I may at the rear of each volume also go into the reproductions to, which in itself is a vast subject

It may take another year or two even three if honest.

I do tend to waffle on about these boxes and packets and 'go all around the houses', before I make my point or give an opinion at times
