Carved wooden officer's box.

Hi Gang,


In person the wood has the patina of some-age, and the carving is really of quite a high quality.

Neither of which means its an original WW2 item.

What are your thoughts?

The symbol on the box's lid is that of the Lebensborn Program and the words refer to "My Ancestors;" the heraldic relief on the lid's underside presents an Oak Tree -- the symbol of strength -- in whose branches the crests of various NSDAP ideas reside. The motto on the tree states: "Hail to the Conscious of the Species," which was a racist theme of the Lebensborn Program. This box does appear to relate to Germany in the 1930s.

It was the quality of wood carving that got me.

The box is about 18" by 18" maybe a tad more.
There is a K98 receiver on the floor in the first image that gives a rough size comparison.

*Funny note - put it on a FB 3R international's collectors site, four German based members said it was a poor quality reproduction -
All FOUR contacted privately to buy my poor quality fake -
Means nothing of course just funny as they all contacted me within minutes of each other.

Box appears to be one converted from one made for holding munitions....Carvings are very well executed, but that is typical of the time....Looks to have been done for a Commander in Norway in 1942....Is quite ornate and interesting....Bodes
