Original shield but is it only me thinking about this "ground" dug?

It can impossible been under the ground close to earth and still have the cloth intact after 70 years +.

Have this shield been found in a grave?

Red rust makes me think not from the ground . Maybe from out of wet storage .... in a tin with water or something similar.

I did not find this one but to find cloth in ground is not uncommon. Also the condition is ok if found in bulk with some other iron material. As I said, I am not the one who found that one but I found many others as I am a metal search detectorist myself.

btw usually dead soldiers were stripped of decorations.

I have in a collection many shields found in the earth. At someone fabric remained, at someone is not present. Everything depends on structure of the soil, humidity, acidity and a set of other factors.
And here the shield shown at the beginning of discussion possibly was found either in a blindage, or on the attic of the house or sand. For the earth the shield has very good condition.
