    Stalingrad Cross

    Hi Gents,
    Would like to hear opinions on the Stalingrad Cross that was attached to the shoulder boards. My main question is should they be made in magnetic metals or unmagnetic??
    I would really appreciate some input,please see the picture of the ones I've been offered for your opinions.

        Hi Bob, IMO they are cast fakes.
        Really poorly made.

            Hi Bob,

            There is only one type of cross that is accepted as textbook by the collecting community. They are stamped, usually from a magnetic metal. However an advantage to metal stamping is that it can be used on both ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Die casting is usually only appropriate for non-ferrous (non magnetic) materials. Any cast ones are most likely non magnetic.

            I have three types of ciphers. Heres my textbook style. The metal is thin and there is a tendency for these to crack easily. Its partner is cracked. Jim

              Heres a non textbook example. I've had this one over twnty years. Magnetic, stamped with a crack along the edge. I've seen a couple of these with the tell tale crack. I believe they are original but can't support it with facts. Its unissued as most are most likely because of the stamping flaw. Jim

                This one i've had over a decade. Again its magnetic, which means its most likely stamped. I think someone screwed with it by pouring a blue was into the arms.

                All three examples are nicely detailed. The two non textbook examples if reproductions are better than any other ciphers etc seen on the market at the time. Most of the reproductions were cast. Its easy to make a mold using dental putty. Even the dental putty doesnt make a perfect mold since it will always be smaller than the original. My two non textbook examples were stamped using a purpose made die. It didn't use the textbook example to make the die.

                      Cheers Guy's for these pics of your SG Crosses,well I suppose short of physically removing them from the boards I won't know,i have agreed a price for a lot boards and these are included in the price but I won't be paying for them until the end of the month so will have to wait a while to get them in hand.

                        Here are mine I got mounted on a complete set (tunic + visor cap) from a family in Cassino where the division fought.
                        I also found anoher one from vet with the same pattern of cyphers. Thin metal sheet stamped, and as Jim pointed out there is a tendency for these to crack easily (llok in the upper corners of mine for example...).

                              Hi Jim, I think they never were painted.
                              But the other set I got, picked up from a friend in a family in south Germany years ago after the death of the owner, is painted.
                              Same pattern of the one I posted, thin metal stamped, with various cracks on corners.
