Post-war reproduction. Lappland shields are a slippery slope, the award was approved only a short time before the war ended. Most are camp made awards and in my view need to have a clear ownership line to the awardee to verify its authenticity. Because of this I wouldn't cast this shield into the trash. This shields can add to a set's personal appeil. I have a Stalingrad Shield and a fantasy SS Panzer Demjansk in my campaign sets.

A friend of mine bought an identical one about 30 years ago at an Ohio gun show. He thought it was the buy of the show and still has it. Made of thin metal with a resin filler on the back to give it rigidity. Also sewn to a cloth backing like this one.

Some collectors think this shield is wartime, som other not.
I personally believe it has chances to be a good one.
It is also pictured on the Uwe Lautenschlager book about the Wehrmacht shields as potentially original (or original maybe).

          My books:

          - THE WEHRPAƟ & SOLDBUCH OF THE WH
          - THE SS TK RING
          - THE ITALIAN-GERMAN MEDAL
          - THE ANTI PARTISAN BADGE
          - THE AWARDS OF THE LW

          and more!

I had one just like that about 35 years ago. Bought it as an original and also sold it as such, but today I donĀ“t believe in them.

It would be interesting to know what the reverse was like. Stewy

And I still got it I think these shields initially were offered without the black stuff, but later added when it was too apparent that the reverse was way too perfect for a "hand-made" piece.

                    cheers

Nah, I believe there was a middle man involved. Either way, it's water under the bridge

This is one of those types that i wouldn't touch unless some good provenance surfaced as to the type's originality, or it was very cheap. there's elements of the deisgn which are too close to the '57 types for comfort, but other elements are completely different.

I would certainly not put much money on the table for one like this as is on it's own.

So i place this type in the 'maybe, maybe not' corner.

Maybe the '57 version was copied from this example.
