This question has been asked several times before and until this day there haven't been period photo's found. It is my personal opinion that this is only a matter of time!!
The Lorient shield was definitely a war time shield. There are several examples known of which this shield was acquired directly from the veteran (or the family).

The Lorient was not officially awarded but was at Christmas Eve 1944 given to the soldiers of the "Festung Lorient".

The awarding of the Lorient shield during Christams Eve 1944 is also confirmed by Kriegsmarine soldiers who actually attended and who actually were given or "awarded" the Lorient shield.

In the Marine archives of Lorient you can find a document in which General Farmbacher (Leader of Festung Lorient) talks about a shield made for the 1944 Christmas feast for all the men of the Festung lorient.
