    Demjansk shield

Hi, I've just received this Demjansk shield, its pretty much how I'd expect a 'missing log' variant to be but I have a couple of observations perhaps you guys can help me with. The first is the amount of pitting or flaws over the shield particularly on the lettering, theres also an amount on the body of the shield itself. The shield also feels quite light and is in fact around 4 grams lighter then a previous shield of this kind I have owned (weight taken from a Niemann expertise). Any opinions on this shield would be appreciated, cheers,

    Paul

Thanks for the reply, it comes in at 21 grams, is that an acceptable weight for this variant, the one I had before was 25 grams, cheers,

                      Paul,

Looks like a nice original to me as well. The small pitting on and around the "2" could simply be results from pitting over time. It's an iron shield and you can see other areas where the rust is taking hold, maybe the pitting is where it was scratched off in the past?

I see nothing wrong with it and certainly its nicer than most seen of this particular pattern.

                      Hope that helps.

                      Tim

Thanks Tim, the flaws in the numerals I thought would be down to a progressive deterioration in the die, this can be seen in examples of this shield where it is more or less perfect apart from the missing log through to others with flaws in the numeral '9' and on to the '4' and '2'. I figured maybe the pitting in the lettering might possibly be down to wear and dirt on the die, cheers,

                          Paul,

Possibly, though I don't remember seeing others showing pitting like that off hand, but admit, its been awhile since looking at these in closer detail. Either way, a decent shield and getting harder to find.

                          Tim
