    Shields - Known and Fantasy - Opinions

    Hi all,

    The Arm Shields are a fascinating field of study. Below is the timeline of the known "manufactured" ones, and a list of others that have been debated for some time.

    A. Known

    1. Narvik Shield - Instituted 19 August 1940

    2. Cholm Shield - Instituted 01 July 1942

    3. Crimea Shield - Instituted 25 July 1942

    4. Demjansk Shield - Instituted 25 April 1943

    5. Kuban Shield - Instituted 21 September 1943

    6. Lappland Shield - Instituted February 1945

    B. Maybes

    1. Warsaw Shield - Instituted 10 December 1944* - Never made it into circulation. The dies were destroyed in a bombing raid before it went into production.

    2. Lorient Shield

    3. Balkan Shield

    4. Dunkirk Shield

    I have seen some of the "Maybe's" posted on dealer sites and I can recollect a few being shown on this forum. Does anyone have any of the "Maybe's" in their collections deemed to be authentic or possibly authentic? What about the Warsaw Shield? If the story is correct, there should be none of these in existence? Fact or Fiction?

    Come on guys, Darrell started what could become a very interesting thread. We have now almost 60 views and not even one reply.
    We are only asking for your opinion you don’t have to proof anything.<O</O
    Why not make your own list of “Know” and “Fantasy”. If you think the Cholm shield never existed then put it in the Fantasy list. If you can add why you think a shield did or did not existed great but you don’t have to.<O</O

    This is only about the actual shield and not about any Soldbuch entries.
    As I said earlier this could become a very interesting thread but only with your help.

      Hi Guys, here is my list:

      Known:
      Narvik
      Cholm
      Krim

      Lorrient (But not worn on the Uniform)
      Dunkirk (worn on the cap)


      Maybe:
      Warsaw (Single prototype)

      Fantasy:
      Balkan (First one I ever bought priced £4.95 in 1977 )

        That was a nice one wasn't it Pascal. Told you we should have bought it just for fun. Ade, Pascal and I discovered that phantasy shield the last time we visited Chiney. If I'm not mistaken it was based upon the Kuban or Krim shield, really hilarious but nicely made.

          Add Budapest to the Fantasy list. From memory, I think it was a big eagle with folded wings standing over the word "Budapest". Can't remember what the motif was like. The one I saw wouldn't (or shouldn't) have fooled anyone.

            hmm i bought a SS photo together with some other pics from a german family, they had no profit in mind, and I got the pieces for the shippingcost. They also sent me a warsaw shield. I asked them agian, but they hadnt touched the stuff for 40 years, thats when the man pictured on the photos died.
            Its corroded and 2 of three prongs are missing.

                The Balkan shield has been identified as being awarded in very limted numbers.The Dunkir shield is a known orriginal. The Nemen front was on paper. Not fantersey.

                    I am quite sure the Stalingrad shield was designed on paper, but was rejected as too morbid. It had the "Red October" factory in the background and a dead German soldier in the foreground lying in snow. There is a sketch of it on the back of "Stalingrad" by Anthony Beevor, but it never went passed this stage as the tide of war changed.

                          Dunkirk Shield

                          My father was at Dunkirk from September, 1944 until the final surrender, May 1945. Admiral Frisius, the Festung commander instituted the shield and officers of the garrison gave him a gift of the shield which was in cloth. No one was actually awarded a metal device, but pictures of the design still exist.

                            Arnim, can you remember if your father mentioned anything more about this particular shield? Did he say that no one was awarded the metal version?

                              I have the photo copies of the documents and shield recieved by a soldier in the enclave. Plus a shield removed by a British vet from the area. In fact removed by him. A citation also exists for the shield. It is estimated that only approxamatly 50 were given out, which would give rise to the members of the garrison not seeing any.
