He really did a nice job on that but what will you do when you get a Narvik and Cholm shield?
So, I have a challenge for Lee. Since most shield backing plates are steel, ie, magnetic, why not route a small circle in each cut out and put a magnate in it. That would help secure the shield better and you could raise it up a bit so that it is not resting on the bottom edge of the cloth backing.
Very nice display.

I have a template for the Narvik, no one has given me sizes for the Cholm yet and since there really is no demand for the stands, I can't see me making one.
I have thought about the magnet, easy to do with a forstner bit. the problem I have with this set up is the back is a little under 1/2" then the routered area takes up around 5/16th" of that, leaving me really no room to play with a magnet. Not enough interest to justify redoing my template to accommodate, say a 3/4" back.

Looks great!
A super idea for displaying shields.
I think there could be demand if you advertised them a bit. Could make them for badges too!

I actually just got a IAB and a matching document so I am going to fiddle around and see what I can come up with to display them together. I don't collect badges so I have limited (one LOL) examples to look at/measure/play with
If anyone here is interested, I have some ready to go to new homes

A narvik is on my radar, the Cholm is still a tad out of my price range at the moment, looking to get a nice tunic first, doesn't help that I just picked up a Großdeutschland officers cuff title either, my poor wallet!!!!!

Unless the average collector has AC....in most man caves this stand will not protect from dust...so if the oak holder is not displayed in a showcase...it needs a clear thin sheet to slide into a channel on the front somehow to prevent that.
Oak is kinda over -kill.... but... to each his own.... a little closer tolerences need practiced with on the outside and depth, and the left one doesn't quite fit well, and the center seems too tight at the bottom of the radius , (so this may have been a first article) you can use those clear sheets for printing overlays on....and add on a tiny edge molding....(also routed to just fit the sheet with clearance )glue the edge moldings to the front 3 edges with a clamp...(of course leaving the top open) and when dry trim plastic sheet to fit...) then if the sheet ever gets scratched it can easily be replaced .(less expensive than plexiglass.Last edited by juoneen; 06-26-2014, 02:15 PM.

Sorry Antonio or Pascal, I realize you will have to hit me with a 10 point infraction for this post, I don't care anymore *shrug*

I would not recommend installing magnets in the bases.
The backing plates being magnetic only means that they contain carbon steel, they are not actually magnetic. By installing magnets and leaving your shields in them against a magnet means that they will eventually actually become magnetic and attract any other carbon steel to them.
Ralph.
