zinc krim or steel krim ??????

I was advised by somebody that only steel krim shields were authentic, i've read posts on this subject, but most memebers seem to have stayed quiet on answering the question.I was under the impression that zinc issue was made for the kreigsmarine divsion due to the corrosive environment of the sea.
does anybody care to throw caution to the wind and answer this question. i see that one opnion was that they were LDO issue, i have a zince piece, and i'm certian its authentic 9 sorry don't know how to post pics ) but if anybody cares to take a look then please email me at :-
neilnitro@aol.com and i'll send them the images for an opnion.

    zinc versus iron

    Hello Neil,

There is no proof at al that only the iron pieces should be original and i believe this rumor to be total out of the air +> so do not believe that one.

I also do not believe zinc made pieces where produced for Kriegsmarine purpose only => the switch towards other metals ( from Iron towards Zinc , etc ... ) is most probable due to the date it was produced and certain metals where more precious for the needs of the wartime industry then others , etc ... + there where certainly other reasons also then the one mentioned.

I have in my collection 2 Krimshields , one is magnetic and the other is not => so there should be absolutely no worry regarding the metal used in my humble opinion.

On the other hand is it possible to send me the pictures : theodorscherer@hotmail.com , then i can post them for you and we can give you a personal opinion on your shield

    Friendly greetings,

All I can say is that I just own an iron core one and the features of mine are quite different. I tend to put these differences down to different makers though, the overall impression of neilnitro´s shield is not really disturbing, but there are a couple of things I noticed:

-Letter "R" of word KRIM seems to be a bit strangely formed on neilnitro´s shield.
-obverse shot seems to indicate odd overall measurement relations might be due to an angled shot though
-eagle´s head different, but I have seen different "valid" designs here at least it´s not the infamous chicken head Krim eagle
-map of Krim area is different, again I think this is not alarming and possibly due to different maker.

In general, I also think that zinc Krim shields (or any shields in zinc) are fine. Nimmergut lists zinc shields extra in price in contrast to iron shield in his well known price guide. Not that this says anything, but just for info.

          Cheers, Frank H.

              tahnsk for posting my pictures

I very much appreciate posting my picturtes, the pictures don't really do the shield justice, i did kind of get it at a stargne angle , becuase of shadow, whcih you'kll see i caught in one of the pics.
the shield is very detailed but the well absorbed zinc finish seems to lose the detail as i zoom out to get the whole badge.the whole thing has a very old appearence about it, and hasn't aged that well.
              i apprecaite all comments.
              regards Neil

                zinc krim

                Hello,

Wel to give you a little more info from my side => i feel totally confident with your Zinc shield, altough the pictures, etc ... are not the best but hey we are not al profesionals when it comes towards taking pictures ( me included )

It is a nice original zinc shield wich has the normal aging for a zinc piece that is not that wel stored and it is a pitty that the backing plate + cloth isn't there anymore, etc ... => altough in relatively bad condition i like it and there should be no need to worry .

                Just my humble opinion,

                Greetings,
