Looking closer at the PIC posted above; are we sure that we don't have these two "types" switched around?

Seems to me that the little mark in between these land masses is evidence of dirt or something that got into the die. The first type would be clean or clear of this and then...

Thoughts?

I just found this one Deumer Krim online (don't own it) and have to wonder if this might be one of the "missing links" between the flatter head versions and the ones that have the rounder head.

- Note the head is not as detailed as the flat-head but, is not as rounded as the others either.

- Note it is missing that little spot between the land masses.

- Note it has the die flaw on the lower right.

- Appears to be made from sheet-steel.

Good for you! It should be a nice study piece and one that may fill in some gaps in our knowledge here. Looking forward to seeing what you find out once its in hand.

If Deumer did have two production dies in use, and at or near the same time frame, then it's possible the one with the center die flaw might come from one die and the other one without from a second die.

Again, as we can see, both dies were used to make both steel and zinc shields which might account for the swap over from one metal to another when the LDO made it mandatory.

It will be curious to look further into the die progression issue now that we have some more comparison pieces to add to the equation.

That certainly is a strange shield. The detail seems to be soft too completely blurred out. For instance, no detail behind the Swaz at all and what's going on with the date numerals, they seem to fade out to nothing.

It'll be interesting to see some better scans.

Hi Peter,

Yes, I seen that too and I don't think its the scans. If you notice the rest of the shield is fairly sharp in details; all except the center portion with the dates and swastika area. I wonder if the stamping was just a bad punch?
