Finally, my longest sought after Krim shield…..

Many years ago I received a question from a fellow collector from Australia about the authenticity of a Krim shield. I had a quick look and told him that IMO it was an original Deumer type shield. However closer examination revealed small differences with the Deumer shields I knew at that time.

From that day on my search started to add this (which later turned out) ultra rare shield to my collection. A couple of years later a German friend managed to acquire the same type of shield together with ALL the paper work, including all the awards, of the recipient.

The years kept going by and I kept on searching and searching………

But than a few months ago I found the shield I was looking for at Detlev's update, but I was too late……….

A few weeks ago a Russian friend who knew I was looking for this type of shield told me he had seen this shield for sale in Moscow. With his help and another Russian fellow collector they managed to acquire the shield for me. It took some time, travel and patience but in the end the shield made the long journey safely to Belgium.

Last week I was be able to pick up the shield and when holding the shield I knew it was worth it.

This is also the fun part of collecting. Searching and trying to find the missing items for your collection is not only fun but also extremely educational.
A Krim shield maybe not that rare but when finally managing to acquire the shield you are looking for such a long it gives you a great feeling.

Anyway, here is the shield that I finally managed to add to my collection thanks to my good Russian friends.

      Hi Peter,

As you noticed, it is certainly close to Deumer but is it a Deumer? I am not quite certain it is.......

This looks like the type Andrei (Tiff) shown at GMIC; is that correct?

I would say, that the characteristics are too close for it not to be a Deumer shield IMO. Very sharp edges to the lower sections of coastline.

What has always concerned me on this one though is, if in fact a Deumer produced shield, the die flaw is not present as it is on all other Deumer Krim shields of various die progressions.

Correct me if wrong here, the shield is zinc?

Hi Tim....although on comparison, very close to a Deumer there are marked differences between the two. Pascal's shield definitely didn't come from the same die stamp.
The shield looks like it had a Bronze/gold wash to it which has all but disappeared.

So, couldn't tell you if this is a Deumer made shield or not, but it's an interesting piece and it's the same type Andrei posted over on GMIC.

              Hi Peter,

Yes, went back over and double-checked; it is the same shield he posted over at GMIC back when we were discussing Deumer shields.

If it's not a Deumer, it sure has some of the same traits. Perhaps a different die, I honestly don't know other than what we concluded to when discussing the die flaw on the eastern pennisula.

So, this shield is zinc then. It should be an interesting discussion once we get there.

                  Hi Tim and Peter
Yes, this is the same shield that I showed at GMIC
Within a few years of searching, we found only 5 of these boards
Schield made from zinc and more heavy than the athers. For all this years that i been searching I found only 3 the same shields. One of them I have. second has my collega ,he bought it from Detlev N .and the third was found in the ground in Russia in citi Kaliningrad -ex Königsberg in Preußen
I dont know is Deumer made that or not. There are Facts that small companes did ordered to make stamps from big companes.because they couldt make them self. Thats possible that this stamp was made by Deumer for ather company. The most of disign stays the same .but littel details are a little bit differents
                  Regards Andrei

Hi Andrei..nice to see you over here. I was thinking the same thing myself.

Did Deumer make this type for another company under contract OR as a major company, did Deumer contract a portion of there quota out to another company giving that company a design to work too...hence the similarites.

Very nice shield Pascal. Kind of nice to see a seasoned collector, still finds excitement in obtaining another specimen for their collection.

The journey and the hunt are fun; but, achieving your objective is much more rewarding.

Congratulations for your beautiful new (and rare) acquisition.

                        Regards,
