Nice Narvik for sure but if its at a site like that...its probably a pretty penny.

            Hi Maks......

......I concur with the others. But, with the reddish coppery look, I tend to want to think that it's cupal. Am I mistaken, or is my monitor misreading the coloration?

It sure looks cupal to me too.

This one also looks like it is the same maker as the double strike versions or is it just my eyes?

              Regards,
              Chris G.

I always thought the KM were CupAl and the LW/ Army Buntmetal...

I'm sure y'all know better than me but when I first saw that coppery color yesterday... cupal came to mind right away. But I didn't respond then because I don't have the expertise.
Like to know the answer to that question about Navy and luftwaffe/heer base metals also. Thanks, John

Had some idle time so thought I would did up some old PICS.

Here's the Heer a little closer next to the Luftwaffe and you can see the copper on the Heer.

A little more light on the subject... These have been shown/discussed in several past threads, but I can't find all of them anymore. Clearly, copper coming through.

Now, was it only a copper coating to allow a better finish to adhere to the metal, or is it actually CupAl (copper/aluminun)? If I remember correctly, and I have these stored away right now and haven't rechecked them, but these are magnetic or at least the backplates were (again I am going from memory).

                          Hi Tim......

That makes sense, if they are magnetic, and would add validity to what Peter had to say:
I always thought the KM were CupAl and the LW/ Army Buntmetal...
I don't suppose that someone would want to dissect a good one to see, though I imagine that there could be a relic/damaged shield out there somewhere just perfect for that purpose.

Campaign shields have always been a favorite of mine, but I've only really had a chance to handle a handful of real ones over the course of my collecting adventure.

I'm waiting for Pascal's book to come out....I know it's going to be special, and it will go a long way in getting to the bottom of many questions.

Thanks for inserting your pics Tim.....always nice to see those great shields!

Isn't it against the law hoarding Narvik's in America Tim...

Here's a comparison of the 3 shields in question

                              ...........

Here's an edge on close-up of the KM shield...is this aluminium where the copper's been rubbed away.

The weight on the KM shield is 22.2 grams

The LW shield shown weighs 29.5 grams

I guess that makes the KM shield Cupal and the LW shield Buntmetal.
