    Marc,

I believe Mike H had a Cholm on blue backing at one time. Do a search for his collection in the Display forum and you might see it.

Yours will be only the 2nd one I have seen. It does not look at all like a green one.

    Gary B

P.S. BTW it is a stunning shield!

The one from Mike Heuer is a beauty. The backing is exactly as I would expect it to be; i.e. color and shape.

It is a Luftwaffe backing, which came in many shades of gray, gray-blue, etc.

Yes, but I bet the manufacturer of Luftwaffe backed Cholm shields used one basic color, especially since the number made in this variation was low.

Probably very true, but I believe this is a replaced backing. This one APPEARS to have a couple of thread knots on the back from being sewn on. I can see an individual having the backing switched to better match the texture and coloration of his own uniform. This might also explain the missing tab and the lack of paper remnants. Just a guess...

Honestly, do you really believe that, or is it more likely that someone just put on a replacement backing to help sell it for more, especially since a Luftwaffe "color" was used.

It has been my experience that the Luftwaffe guys often used no backing at all. They mounted the shield directly to the jacket sleeve, and used the backplate on the inside of the sleeve to secure it, behind the sleeve lining so the shield attachment would cause no interference between the sleeve and insde lining.

BTW, here is a Cholm Shield that was recently acquired form a "veteran" source. Notice the difference in the "M" between this one and the one from Marc. I assume that is just two different manufacturers.

                      Tom,
As I indicated, the cloth backing appears to have been sewn at one time. Whether someone has "hyped" it up to sell, I can't say.
I've had many Luftwaffe tunics with arm shields (unfortunately, not a Cholm!). My experience is that more have the backing cloth than don't, although I have seen both types of mounting used.
                      Best,
                      Leroy

                        Tom,

Your Cholm may have a paper backing from the ones I have seen? The forum guys refer to them as long M. With the examples I have seen of this type they seem to rust in varying degrees pretty bad but I really like them.<O</O

I agree with your shield application thoughts absolutely. There is only speculation that is a stretch IMO for a period cloth replacement.<O</O

This one doesn't have any backing, and the corrosion is from poor storage. But I have an identical one that is in near mint condition that does have a paper backing, so you are correct on this.

I got this from a family member with papers. It looks blue then gray with different light.

                              Hi Dan,
Thank you for posting your shield.
Beside the fact that I have no doubt about the authenticity of this shield I especially like two things about your shield. First a so called “Long M” shield acquired directly from the family.
Secondly your shield has the backing plate on top of the cloth. Rarely seen but absolutely original.

You mean absolutely screwed with either during or after the war. I like the backing, no problem, but sometime it was disassembled and re-assembled incorrectly.
