Cholm Shield - Real or Fake?

    Hello!
I have an opportunity to buy a Cholm Shield. I read the articles on the Type 1 and Type 2 Shields. Being new to collecting I think there may be a problem with the number of pins on the back to hold the shield in place. The Shield I am looking to buy only has two pins on the back. One on top and one on the bottom. The seller claims that it is real and offers to take it back if it is not.

Sorry but I am new to the forum and have not figured out how to post photos yet.

    Regards,
    Robert

      Hi Robert

In order to be able to attach photos you must become an Association Member. As Far as 2 prong Cholm, I would stay away from it.

        Robert,
IMO a 2 pin Cholm shield made from Buntmetall did exist.
It is however very important to see pictures or scans of this shield.

It is generally accepted that 2 pin Buntmetall Cholm shields did exist.
Most likely is that these shields were not made to wear but for example for use on a photo album.

The shield here shown is IMO such a 2 pin Buntmetall shield.
I don’t like the backing plate and the cloth and I do think these were attached later. This fits in with the other known 2 pin Buntmetall Cholm shields which were all found without any backing plate and cloth.

I agree that the pictures could be much better.

                      ....

Another from Robert but still could do with a straight on shot..

                        Hello Pascal!

What does IMO mean? Sorry, I'm new so some of the terms escape me.

                        Thanks,

                            Dear Pascal:

OK so we have more or less established that 2 Pin Buntmetall Cholm Shields did exist. And we have also established that these two pin shields may have been sold to soldiers for display on a photo album or some other display item. In a way they are like glorified giant stickpins without the pin.

It still beggs the question however, does this Cholm Shield look the way it should. Are all the elements, i.e. the eagle's head, body and other major sections of the shield correct? Is it worth buying to become part of my collection. I have tried to stay to the highest standards possible on everything I have purchased so far. I understand that Cholm Shields can be very expensive when compared to the prices for KUBAN, KIRM and other shields. Is this a worthy addition?

Just some thoughts I wanted to share.

                            Regards,
                            Robert

Hi Robert....I still think you need to see better scans of this shield. If it's Buntmetal then as Pascal said, it's probably an original piece but also bear in mind, is this an award or a representation of the award. ie- a commemorative piece.

                              Just my 2 cents worth....Peter
