    KM Narvik Shield G.B.42 marked

Hello, I am new to this forum and would appreciate any opinions on this award. I am unable to post a picture, so will describe as best as possible.
The shield is non-ferrous with the usual 4 brass prongs to the rear, and measures approx. 90mm x 42mm at the largest length and width. It seems very thin and light and I would have guessed it was made of aluminium or similar, possibly zinc. The back plate is ferrous and is not the usual oval shape, but faithfully follows the shape of the shield, except for the cutout around the eagle's head. The back plate appears to have signs of galvanisation, and is marked G.B.42 There is no material or paper backing. It displays none of the usual giveaway defects, except that the 4 is not pointed at the top, though is nicely in line with the 0. I have searched this forum but seem nothing similar. Thank you in advance for any suggestions. Jon in the UK

Sounds like a fake Deumer with cutout backplate.

I'm going to move this to the General Awards forum for more input, although it sounds like it's already been ID'd.

Evaluate the item, not the story and not the seller's reputation!

Hi Filip, thanks for the reply. Do you know if G.B.42, presumably Gustav Brehmer, made these shields? And also, what are the correct dimensions, as this seems a little under-size. Thanks Jon.

                Hi Jon
There are several original types of Narvik shield around, but we can only guess who the makers of them were. The main reason for that is that unlike most other awards, shields were not maker marked. The one you showed was copied from a so called "Deumer" type. But this time the fakers gone overboard by stamping that GB42 MM. As far as Gustav Brehmer, there are no shields of any kind associated with this maker.

Hi Filip, looks like another case of 'you get what you pay for'!! Thanks again for the feedback. Jon.
