the jury is still out as to wether the lorient shield was ever awarded at all, but i think by the look of it, this one at least is a bad one!!

Not at all ....The last thread on this award ended a bit fractious. The only point I'd make is the 1000 eur price tag for an award that's impossible to authentic.
Comparing this one to the example in Chris Ailsby's book show's what a poor fake this is.

Of course the dogtag (type 2) did exist and maybe a more acceptable version. (or are they faked as well)

                  Best.....Peter

I have to agrea with Peter on this, a poor fake. The problem with this shield is that it was home made. There are two designs that are know originals, very similar but just less distinkt. The one I have came from a known perriod collection, taken at the time, 10 pieces in all. The other is David Litttlejohns, this he bought in 1950. The disk type I have is similar to that which was taken from the base by an American service man. The example I have came with soldbuck. So as they say, "you pays your money and take your chances".

ive seen examples in collections inluding chris ailsbys, and they all look different to this one, but as you say, being homemade, there could be endless variations on this theme! its an easy piece to fake, so we must assume the majority out there are fakes, but this doesnt mean they all must be. i wouldnt buy one without provenance, but this seems hard to come by!!

It would be interesting to see your one....problem is, it would give the faker's something too copy....

How scarce is the Lorient shield, say, compared to a Cholm or maybe a Don Cossack Badge

Those questions are very hard to evaluate. I have two Lorients one disk, Cholms I have three, Don Cossak I have not been able to get one. Seen a number but have always been too late.
