Applying a krimshield to the tunic, how?

Gentlemen, i have an important question. How was a campaignshield applied to the tunic?

Were the prongs stucked through the sleeve and the clothbacking and then connected with the backingplate and then the clothbacking sewed to the sleeve???


Or were the prongs never stucked through, just the backingcloth sewed to the sleeve?

I mean, there are pics with shields attached without the backingcloth.

Campaigns shield were either sewn with the backing cloth to the tunic or when no backing cloth was used (which a lot of times happened) the prongs were stuck through the tunic sleeve and attachted with or without the backingplate on the inside.

Yes indeed, and that is why mostly the prongs are covered with paper or cloth.

I have never heard of that before. The reason why so many shields were attached without any cloth is for the simple fact that they were either awarded or bought without any cloth.

The shield shown by Stockel could have been worn with or without backingcloth at the beginning. After some of the prongs broke off during wear the shield was reattached using self made holes and stitching.

I think the idea behind it was that some felt the backing cloth looked strange being sowed over the existing cloth and if just the shield was worn it looked a little neater?
