I am told that these were mistakenly called salesman's sample boards, when in fact they were made up to sell to returning soldiers who wanted souveniers.

Still some very interesting items on the board.

They are nice things, I got this before the motel buyer cut the medals off, he had one other and I could not buy both,

They would have a card with them telling what the medal was by number. I saw one on bay 6 years ago and it went for more than I wanted to pay. I have seen a dozen or so at shows over the years. Sometimes they will have a fairly scarce medal, and are of course price accordingly, any more out there?

I have gotten several dozen of this type arrangements from the veterans who brought them back. These are left over medals, sewn to cardboard after the war. The cardboards are often the placemats, from the companies cafeteria, where workers received bread and soup, at their lunch or dinnertime. The ladies would sew them to the cardboard, attempt to identify them, and sell or barter with GIs for cash or staples needed to survive.

You will often see the wrong ribbons and even badges or medals that are icomplete, once the finished items were sold or traded off.

I, too, have bought several of these from veterans. Most are Deumer marked and were made up by Deumer.
The best two I have ever seen were owned by a Doctor in FL. They both had a pin back Death Order on them in super condition, so I assume that Deumer made the Death Order Cross and one was with swords and one was not. Could not buy them, but really would have liked to have gotten them.

You are correct in that assumption.
Deumer was the maker of the German Order......and many of the NSDAP Service Crosses as well, as indicated by the Deumer RZM code on their boxes.
