Cholm Shield Question

[U-Boot Kapitan]

Hi All,
I have a vet acquired Cholm Shield. It is one of the award pieces in steel with three prongs.
The shield has a gold finish instead of silver and looks like it always has.
Does anybody out there know if Cholm Shields were ever awarded to Kriegsmarine personnel? Or indeed any other reason why the shield might have this finish?
