Although I do not collect shields I agree with Gene 110%. This being a very rare shield it is faked to the limit. The newest fake on the market makes all the old attempts look quite crude. If you are going to pay the type of money that is commanded for a period Cholm Shield it had better have razor sharp details and be textbook.

Just look at the edging on the shield, both inner and outer (especially in post #5) particularly the upper left. Lame detail, misshapen, just not convincing in the slightest.

Since the shield has obviously been

Guess there is no need to post better photos on the 23rd.........?

Well guys, I'm Off to see the wizard, and buy his relics! I know, follow the yellow brick road. And watch out for the tin man!

Just for setting the record straight I want to make clear that shield shown by Gene is NOT the type with the long “M” as I asked for. So Gene is right that there world of difference between the two shields as shown by Howard and Gene. Most noticeable the different “M”.

Gene, I hope you don’t object for me showing the complete shield.

Ps. picture removed as requested by Gene but Gene's shield can still be seen in this article http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/camp...child3gene.htm

                  Pascal,

You are missing the point. Now please if you would, remove the pic.

                    Hi Gene,

Curious, but what is your point?

That you have a shield, that as you say is original, and the shield I am going to buy does not match your shield. And since my shield does not match your shield, that my shield is fake????????

One can clearly see, several differences in your shield, and the one I have posted.

Gee, you don't think that there could have been another company making Cholm shields? Oh No............please say it isn't so!

That right, one maker! No other room for thinking outside the box.
                    Mine good! All other bad!

Would have been nice to get into the nitty gritty details about the Cholm shield, but I can see that will never happen.

Maybe we should go back to talking about some jive white guy that raps, and is an inspiration to a generation, the same generation that one day will be buying our relics. That's funny!

                    Cheers,
                    Howard

                      Howard,

Your shield is as real as you want it to be. This particular shield is heavily faked and I keep saying the same thing when people post one for opinions- look for razor sharp detail. Enjoy your shield, be proud of it, thumb your cybernose at me and revel in its originality.

                        Hi Everyone,

I really hate to see this thread go this direction. Let's keep in going in a civil manner. Personally, I am a novice when it comes to Cholm shields. I am just know feeling comfortable with Kuban, Krim, and Narvik shields, Thanks to Pascal! I would really like to learn more about these wonderful shields. How many accepted variations are their with providence?

                          New Photos Cholm shield

                          As promised.

                          Photos of the Cholm shield.

Also bought several other items from the daughter of the W.W.II vet.
Army Para, Gold Wound, Silver Wound, near mint Kuban shield, several breast eagles, 1st and 2nd class Iron Crosses, etc., etc. All the items were 100% original.

Gene, guess we'll never see eye to eye on this piece. But I do agree, this shield is reproduced, and people should be very cautious when buying.

Thanks to all for your comments.

Thanks Howard for sharing your Cholm shield with us.
I really like this shield and I am glad it looks just the way I was expecting it would be.

This is the only type of the long “M” which I would feel comfortable with to have in my collection.

                              Very nice

                                Different Cholm Shied makers?

                                Hello Pascal,

You seem to know more about these campaign shields than anyone else I have met. Would you mind answering a few questions?

How many different manufactures do you know made the Cholm shield?
From looking at other threads, I have only found two different period made examples. Are there others?

We all know that with the volume of Krim, Kuban, and to a lesser degree Demjansk shields being awarded to Wehrmacht personal. These shields were being made by the 10's of thousands, and were made by SEVERAL different companies.

Could it not also be true that more than one company made the Cholm shield?

Original Cholm shields are close to equal to the amount of Knight's Cross's awarded. So why are there different makers of the Knights Cross? If only ten thousand (+/-) were awarded, why the need for more than one company to make the awards? Godet, or Juncker could have easily made the 10 thousand.

But, alas........there are several different makers of the Knight's Cross. Why?

Why not have more than one maker of the Cholm shield?

Because one shield does not match another is not always a bad sign. If we can confirm that the item in question is original. Does it not help all collector's learn something "new." That is what the forum is for....., the free exchange of ideas and knowledge.

                                Regards,
                                Howard
