Narvik Shield - good or bad???

    Hi guys,

I am needing some help as I am wanting to buy an authentic Narvik Shield. I have been offered this one and the dealer guarantees it, but it just looks too good to be true. Another collector has warned me off it, stating that he would not buy it.
So what do you all think, is this one good or bad?

Looks to me as your collector friend is right. IMO this is a VERY good copy of the so called Deumer type Narvik shield.

      Thanks Pascal,

That will save me $169 and a red face!

How about this one, which is on offer by another seller? My collector friend says it looks better. Any comments on this one will also be greatly appreciated.

Even if this second example is good, it has so much zincpest and corrosion that I would wait for a better example.

          Hello Ian,
The second one is an original one but as Richard already mentioned I also don't like the condition this shield is in.

Thank you for your comments. Yes, it looks a bit like someone has fished it out of the ocean, doesn't it? The buyer wants nearly $300, but I think due to its condition it is really only worth half that.

I am not in any hurry and would prefer a good one. If anyone on this forum has got one they are willing to sell or trade, please let me know. Or perhaps someone may know of a reputable dealer who stocks a few good ones?

I just bought that one from The Collectors Guild.
Its exactly the same one and the same picture. http://www.germanmilitaria.com/Heer/photos/H62850.html

Btw, glad its not fake. I dont care if its not in good condition. I have been wanting an original Narvik Shield as long as I can remember, but cannot afford the high priced perfect ones.

Congatulations Tom with your new shield .
I bet it looks much nicer in real then on the pictures.
I think it is the so called Deschler type shield. Has it also the bubbling silver finish?

Maybe you can email me some scans so we can have a better look of the shield.

I was going to buy that one but it is in very poor condition and a bit overpriced. I also showed photos of it to a couple of experts who said it looked like one of the common post-war fakes.
I am at a complete loss to know how anyone can tell whether a Narvik Shield is good or bad. I've decided to give up on it. I might just buy a cheap $9 repro and display it in my collection. At least no one will be able to argue with me that it is not a repro!

, I would be very surprised if it was!

Don't give up. Just wait for Frank's new book about the Armshields and all will be explained .

Not overpriced if you had the prices orginial stuff goes for here.. But as I said, $260 is well worth the money for me, overpriced or not, as I finally got what I have been wanting since I was in my early teens.
If it turns out to be a fake, Collectors Guild got some serious problems comming their way..
I am a total moron when it comes to telling fakes from reals thought. I have my special fields considering knowledge, but award badges is not one of them.

For the record, I hate everything even related to repros... That goes for everything from uniforms, to badges to field gear.. Pretty sarcastic making money on other peoples lack of knowledge....
Just imagine how collectors gonna struggle in 200 years from now...

One of the fakes is very easy to pick. The feet on the eagle look like rooster's feet. They sort of hang down and dangle in two pairs of three toes.
