    What is this for?

This turned up the other day. No medal came with it and there are no markings, apart from the LDO logo. The case looks black in the scans but I think it is more of a very dark blue (maybe "faded" black). The leatherette hinge is 100% intact. The recess takes is sized for a 42-43 mm medal/cross with ring but the arms of the cross would have to be no more than 17-18 mm wide. It is too small for an EK2. I have no doubts about the authenticity of the case.

I have an idea what it is for, but I'm interested to hear what others may think it once contained! An approximate value would also be appreciated.

    Hi Mike,
looks alot like the "variation" case for the Faithful Service award pictured on pg143 of Angolia's F&F Political and Civil awards.
The dimensions seem right for this size award/cross also.

It looks to me like the LDO case for a 1939 EK II.

Or maybe a KVK 2nd class?

Hi and thanks to those who responded. Unfortunately Bill, the recess is too small for an EK2, even a WW1 EK2 - I wish it wasn't! Same applies for the KVK2. Paul has come to the same conclusion as I did, using the same reference! The Truedienst Ehrenkreuz fits snugly into the case but I don't know if it's the 100% correct answer (although most likely). The only other medal I can think of that may fit is the Feuerwehr Ehrenzeichen but I don't own one of these to try it out for size.

          Any other thoughts/suggestions?

If it is the one-size fits all Truedienst Ehrenkreuz variation case, what would members value it at?

          Thanks

            Hello Mike and Paul,
            Just caught this thread.
I agree it is the LDO Case for the Faithful Service Cross. Looks like cut marks in the recess - am I correct???
The original Presentation cases were longer and imprinted on the inner lid "Treue um Treue" with the likeness of Hindenburg's signature. And the bottom portion was removalble and also had a recess so that the ribbon could be folded under the bottom portion and then over the top of the medal. My three cased examples came with certificates that were under the bottom portion of the box.
            Regards,
            CJ

              Hi CJ,

I was going to say I think you've got your Ehrenkreuz and Ehrenzeichen mixed up but the Ehrenkreuz fur Frontkampfer also fits into the recess! I hadn't tried it until then as I thought it would be too small. The fit is a little loose compared to the Truedienst Ehrenzeichen however so I'm thinking the latter award is still my first preference for what the case may have contained. The recess is slotted/cut as you noted CJ but the insert is still fixed into place. I can only assume that the ribbon for whichever medal came with the case was simply inserted loosely. It seems the case is fairly multi-purpose!

              Thanks for your response.

                Hi Mike,

I'm pretty sure it's for the Treudienst Ehrenzeichen. I have a cased Feuerwehr Ehrenzeichen and the case is quite different. I'll post a pic when I get a bit more time if you like.

                Regards,

                James

                  Hi James,

Please post away when ready by all means! It sounds like you've got the standard award Feuerwehr Ehrenzeichen case, or is it an LDO marked version? If the latter then I can scratch the Feuerwehr Ehrenzeichen from the list of possibilities.

                  Thanks
                  Mike K
